FAQs

How do I become an FTA student?

The enrolment process is simple: download the registration form, complete it and send it back to us. Click here to download the form.

How long does it take to study for the exam?

There is no hard and fast rule – the study period can vary depending on your previous background, how fast you learn, and how much time you can devote to study.  However, as a general guide, the Professional Tax Adviser qualification is expected to take approximately 140 hours of studying.

Where can I sit my exams?

FTA exams can be taken at either:

  • one of our accredited training providers; for details click here or

  • at a Pitman training centre; to find your local centre click here

How do I become an FTA member?

Once you have successfully completed the Professional Tax Adviser qualification you are eligible for two years’ Associate membership of the FTA.

Eligibility to renew your membership after this period is subject to your having passed the following IFA module:

The ethical professional
This module explores the relevance of ethics in professional situations and is obtained by attending a half day workshop, or following a self study route (launch date TBC), followed by an assessment.

Why change from modules to units?

The IFA core qualifications have been accredited by Qualification and are therefore listed on the UK’s Credit Framework (QCF).  As part of this process we were required to make some changes in the language we use (qualification components will become units rather than modules) and titles of modules and qualifications will be modified to fit QCF criteria.  We also took this opportunity to update some content and clarify certain syllabus areas.

Will this affect the study guide?

The BPP Taxation study guide is published annually (early in the year) and is relevant for both the June and December exam sittings for that year.
