Corporation tax planning for losses and other reliefs - Craig Hughes, Brown Butler
September 2021

Many companies have struggled over the last 18 months but there are some temporary extensions to loss reliefs which should help. The new super deduction for capital allowances can enhance tax relief on qualifying expenditure but how “super” is it really? Other reliefs such as R&D tax credits are often overlooked. The increase in corporation tax to 25% from 1 April 2023 will reshape how we look at profit extraction and incorporations.

An introduction to UK trusts - Vicky Hughes, Brown Butler -
September 2021

Trusts can be created during lifetime or on death and are considered for a variety of reasons –including asset protection, passing wealth down the generations whilst retaining an element of control and tax planning. The terminology and tax rules can seem complex and this introductory presentation seeks to address the basics so that you can feel more comfortable if/when you come across these within your client’s tax matters. HMRC reporting requirements for trusts are increasing and so are the associated penalties for not keeping up with these. A knowledge of UK tax filing obligations is important for income tax, capital gains tax and inheritance tax in the UK.

R&D tax relief – opportunities and challenges - David Elliott, Catax -
September 2021

R&D tax relief has been with us since 2001, but many companies that could claim it still don’t. A lack of understanding on the part of many accountants about what activities constitute qualifying R&D activities may be to blame. The relief available has increased, progressively, since 2001. Whilst a cap on the size of the repayable R&D tax credit now is now in place, many opportunities for relief exist. Further opportunities will arise with the planned increase in the rate of corporation tax from 2023. There has been a steady increase in the number of HMRC enquiries, as they seek to ensure that eligibility is correct.

VAT update – domestic reverse charge (DRC), the new VAT rules in the construction industry - Kevin Hall, Wright Hassall LLP
May 2021

The VAT rules in the construction industry changed on 1 March 2021 when the domestic reverse charge (DRC) was introduced. The new rules have caused confusion when getting into the detail of how they will be operated. This was so marked across the industry that the start date has been delayed twice in two years, but it has now come into force.

This presentation will explore the new rules and some of the issues which are encountered in practice. There is no lower limit where small traders are excluded from the new VAT rules, and even the 5% disregard is not straightforward.
